At the same time, we recognise that technology is a tool to enhance learning, not replace the rich experiences that are fundamental to childhood and development.
Specialist Computer Science and Technology Education
Computer Science is taught by specialists from Reception onwards, introducing pupils to age-appropriate coding, programming and computational thinking from the outset. A fully equipped, state-of-the-art ICT and technology suite sits alongside class sets of laptops, enabling technology to be integrated meaningfully across the curriculum. Robotics, AI, virtual reality, coding, web design and digital literacy are all taught as part of a progressive Computer Science curriculum that prepares boys for the opportunities and challenges of the digital future. Coding clubs and enrichment opportunities beyond the school day allow programming enthusiasts to develop their passion far beyond the classroom.
To ensure we are in line with Year 7 provision in Senior Schools, boys in Years 7 & 8 are provided with their own device for use in the classroom.
Balancing Technology with Screen-Free Learning
However, we are equally committed to ensuring that technology is used thoughtfully and in balance. We believe that children learn best through a wide range of experiences, many of which are screen-free. Handwriting, reading physical books, practical problem-solving, creative arts, scientific investigation, outdoor learning, sport and face-to-face collaboration all remain central to school life. These experiences help develop concentration, creativity, resilience, communication skills and critical thinking in ways that technology alone cannot.
Our Approach to Digital Wellbeing and Child Development
Our approach is to teach boys not only how to use technology confidently and responsibly, but also when it is most appropriate to step away from a screen. By striking this balance, we ensure that pupils develop the digital skills they will need for the future while enjoying a rich, active and well-rounded education that nurtures curiosity, independence and strong interpersonal relationships.

How much screen time do pupils have during the day?
The vast majority of our boys’ week remains focused on discussion, reading, handwriting, practical activities, sport and outdoor play. We believe that technology should be used purposefully to support key learning objectives. Traditional teaching methods and screen-free activities remain central to our curriculum and digital tools are used when they add value to a lesson.
How do you ensure pupils still develop handwriting and traditional academic skills?
Handwriting, reading, arithmetic and critical thinking remain fundamental to our educational approach at Tower House. Technology complements these skills rather than replacing them, and our pupils largely work with pen and paper throughout the school day.
How do you promote digital wellbeing and using technology responsibly?
We encourage regular movement, outdoor activity, teamwork and varied learning experiences throughout the school day. Pupils are taught that digital wellbeing is about balance and knowing when technology is useful and when it is time to switch off. We hold regular workshops throughout the school year when our boys learn about online safety, digital wellbeing, responsible use of artificial intelligence, privacy, critical evaluation of information and maintaining healthy habits around technology. We also encourage our families to sign up to the Smartphone Free Childhood, helping to encourage a balanced digital approach inside and outside school.
